A doula’s job is to support parents in the way that is best for them.  They provide physical and emotional support during the birth as well as information and education about options available.  They provide resources for them prenatally to ensure parents are ready for their birth and life as a new parent.  Furthermore,  a doula meets with families in the postpartum time to help the family adjust to life with a newborn.  While a doula provides support and information, a doula does not make decisions for parents or provide any medical assistance.  Their job is to support parents as they do what is right for them.  We have no opinion about what is right or wrong. We want you to feel like you have the tools and time to make the right decisions for you.

For example-

-during prenatal visits we might focus on how you like to be comforted, what kind of birth you see yourself having, any fears you have, what role your partner or family members would like to play, specific pain coping strategies, among many other things.  We do not check cervical dilation or take your blood pressure.

-at your birth we may be suggesting different positions to help your pelvis open, massaging pressure points to help contractions and pain, working on the environment in the room,  getting your partner water or snacks so they can be fully present,  taking photos and notes, communicating with the medical staff, bringing you a warm lavender rice sock for your back, etc (ask us if you want to know more specifics). We will not be administering drugs or deciding if/when you should get them. However, we do support women no matter they chose is best for themselves.

-at your postpartum visit- we will help you with slings, breastfeeding, laundry, nipple care, ayurvedic approaches to healing, bonding with baby, things dad can do, processing the birth, etc. We will not be weighing baby or doing any medical checks on mom or baby.
